Who Will Win The Chinese GP?
I have been watching the F1 for 10 years and even I am clueless about it this time around. Redbull most probably but TBH, no one knows the golden tire/aero combo for the upcoming Shanghai GP until the first car graces the tarmac of Shanghai International Circuit on Thursday during the FP1.
Since these ground-effect cars are on a whole another level of performance compared to the last-gen cars there is plenty of skepticism being tossed around the pitlane. Pirelli Formula 1 chief engineer Simone Berra expressed his frank opinion “The track was really not used in five years, it was just used for one race per year or something like that. So, it will be really green and quite dirty, although obviously, they will clean the track”.
A sentiment further echoed by current driver’s champion and Sprint critic Max Verstappen who said “I think it’s not great to do that because when you have been away from a track for quite a while, I think you never know what you’re going to experience, so it would have been better to have a normal race weekend there”
The uncertainty around the performance of current F1 cars in Chinese GP is due to the new Pirelli compound, 18-inch wheels, and an altered track surface. The lattermost was recently done to ensure that the bumps do not damage the fragile underbody of superlow and track-hugging F1 cars.
Pirelli will be bringing C2, C3, and C4 compounds to the Chinese GP as we found out in the official FIA mandate above. Many F1 teams will be relying on historical data to figure out the best strategy for the main race on Sunday. Stay tuned as we update this section after FP1.
The newly revamped asphalt on the Shanghai circuit has one of the most exciting first few corners on the calendar namely, Turn 1, 2, and 3. The track is based on the Chinese symbol of “shang” which roughly means to ascend. Alex Albon once described the circuit as having “a thousand lines” that the drivers could choose from. Chinese GP is expected to have a near-perfect ambient condition throughout the race weekend with temps hovering between 13 to 21 degrees Celsius with a gentle breeze blowing for a whole week.

As I suspected after 5 years things were bound to get “wet n wild” in Shanghai and they did as Lando Norris took the pole for the sprint race due tomorrow. Norris will share the front will with Lewis Hamilton who will have a hell of a time defending from race start wizard Alonso and understandably pissed Max Verstappen in 3 and 4 respectively.
