'14 Chevy Camaro Z/28 is what happens when you take the best bits from the GM parts bin and toss them all together with a dash of LS7.

A Legend Resurrected

2014 Chevy Camaro Z/28 all you need to know

When Chevy first decided to introduce the Z/28 moniker back in late ’67 no one even knew about it apart from a select few in Vince Piggins inner circle. Its was meant to take on the Boss Mustang. A rivalry that continued till the end of Camaro nameplate this year.

All Z/28s are designed to hunt apex’s straight from the factory floor and come with a mammoth 505 hp 427 Cu V8 as standard.

The Heart of the Beast

At the core of the 2014 Camaro Z/28 lies its pièce de résistance a 505 hp big block 427 with Titanium connecting rods, cold air intake, revised tuning and a dry sump lubrication. The immense volume it displaces takes care of the low down torque, a healthy 481 lb-ft arriving at 4800 rpm.

A close ratio 6 speed manual is the sole tranny option with Helical gears that sends power to the rear wheels via limited slip differential and “Stabilak” TCS with exclusive tuning that allows for individual adjustments.

Lightning-Fast Performance

“The Camaro Z/28 is an uncompromising performer that’s bred for the track – and
every one of its unique components supports the goal of faster lap times,”

Mark Reuss, president, General Motors North America.

In an independent testing conducted by C & D, the 2014 Camaro Z/28 did a 4.4 seconds 0-60 mph sprint and passed a quarter mile in just 12.7 seconds @116 mph flat out it will do 172 mph. Not bad with all those aero bits hanging about.

GM Practically Re-Invented Wheels For Z/28

2014 Chevy Camaro Z/28 carbon brakes

Camaro Z/28 was the first car to feature Pirelli P-Zero Trofeo Rs. The slickest street legal tires Pirelli ever made back in 2014. They might not even last 2000 miles but the grip they provide is on a whole another level. A solid 1.08 G.

Which helped it dethrone Porsche Carrera and Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 on the green hell by posting a track time of 7:37. The Italian made rubber was shod on 19-inch forged aluminum wheels and measured 305 front and back, saving almost 50 pounds in unsprung weight.

The “Keto” Camaro…

GM shaved over 300 pounds over the Standard SS resulting in a curb weight of 3820 pounds. Which is acceptable by muscle car standards. The standard brakes were Brembo carbon ceramic matrix with 15 inches + rotors both front and rear and could produce a rib crushing 1.5 G in deceleration.

The lightweight approach was also taken to its aerodynamics which resulted in 440 pounds of downforce and 150 mph.

The Carbon front splitter made around 250 pounds. Chevy also gave it a large Carbon functional Hood which extracted hot air from the engine bay and sent it to the rear “wickerbill” spoiler. The latter had special vertical tabs to reduce lift.

The rockers, a CFD designed belly pan and extended wheel arches also reduced the turbulent airflow and channel it away from the vehicle.

The brakes alone shaved around 21 pounds. AC was optional and lightweight rear seats were 9 pounds lighter than standard ones. Other weight saving steps include-

  • No tire-inflator kit
  • Removal of interior sound deadner, trunk carpet,AC, headlamps and fog lights
  • A smaller battery was used along with a thinner 3.2 mm glass

Inside, It’s All About Performance

However, Chevrolet gave buyers the option to add the air conditioner back with a single package. The Recaro seats with microfiber inserts and bolsters are engineered for high-performance driving, ensuring you stay firmly in place during spirited maneuvers.

The flat-bottom steering wheel pays homage to race car-inspired interiors, driving home the point that this car means business.
