Here Is Everything You Need To Know About The 1967 Chevrolet Impala From The Supernatural

Supernatural is an American TV series from Warner Bros. first aired on September 13, 2005, on The WB channel and saw a 15-year run with a total of 327 episodes. It is a fantasy show where the Winchester brothers travel cross-country to fight the paranormal and engage in other misadventures along the way. Along with the brothers, there was also a 1967 Chevrolet Impala sedan that was proudly piloted by Dean Winchester on all their shenanigans. The car holds significant value for the protagonist because it was handed down to him by his late father. The car was not just a mode of transportation but also holds the weapons that helped them to fight evil, and also acted as a makeshift home on multiple occasions when they are out in action. In this article, we are going to throw some light on the iconic sedan and provide all you need to know about the car.

Why the 1971 Chevrolet Impala?

Initially, when Eric Kripke, was first convinced to make the Supernatural series the original thought was to include a ’60s Mustang as the main transformation. He wanted the car in the show to provide significant value with a character of its own. However, after having a chat with one of his neighbors who was a car enthusiast suggested using the 1967 Chevy Impala because of the naturally intimidating appearance of the car. The excessive trunk space was also one of the big reasons because to fight the evil Winchester brothers needed to carry an arsenal, a lot of it actually. The big trunk of the car became a virtual armory of weapons and also the huge interior space of the car also made sure that the brothers can sleep in it after a long day at work.

The 1967 Chevrolet Impala is a basic sedan, and also it is not as mainstream or badass as Mustang, however in our opinion, it fitted the overall story better. The car when it first got introduced was a family sedan and according to Dean, the car carried a small-block 5.3 Liter V8 engine. However in real life, the primary “hero car” used a more powerful GM 502-cid crate engine under the hood. There were 9 of them in total used in the entire series including one that was completely totaled at the end of the first season.

Over the 15 years of The Supernatural, there are certain fans with no automobile background who mistakenly believed that the car used in the show was some kind of SS variant, however, that is not the case because the SS variant did not make its way to the Impala Sedan. Only seasoned car enthusiasts know that the car used was a simple Impala Sedan with a basic engine. For the transmission, it would be safe to say that it was a 2-speed Powerglide automatic gearbox, considering the model and platform of the car. It is almost in stock form, but the wheels were upgraded with a Cragar 330 Series Super Sport wheels that look like something out of the early 1990s.

Furthermore, the other cars used in the show came with conventional drivetrains from which one car was later kept by Jensen Ackles, however, he has to add air conditioning because he lived in Texas, and the heat can get unbearable during summers. Also, he upgraded the stock suspension with the Hotchkiss suspension system.

How The Supernatural Made the 1967 Chevrolet Impala a popular culture icon

The Supernatural Made the 1967 Chevrolet Impala a popular culture icon

Since The Supernatural ran for 15 years, it is inevitable that the show was loved by people and created a cult-like following for the 1967 Chevrolet Impala. The car is prominently used on the show from the beginning till the end. There were a total of 9 cars in the whole production and one of the stunt cars crashed at the end of the first season. There was also another car that was chopped into two sections to get the interior shots from different angles.

Outside of the studio, the car made a certain impact on the fans of the TV show and everybody wanted this ordinary sedan from 1967. Since the inception of the show people diligently started to look for the car and convert them in the same spec. Therefore because of the increased demand the prices of the 1967 Chevrolet Impala started to grow and it can easily cost around $50,000 for a pristine one. Before the show, the 1967 Impala was not particularly a good sort after car and people usually considered convertible and coupe options instead of the sedan. This was changed because of The Supernatural and the show revived the car, which as of 2023 would have been long gone and forgotten by the people.
