The Porsche 911 GT2 was developed as a track-focused car. The first generation 993 was manufactured with an air-cooled twin-turbocharged engine that generated 444 hp and 432 lb-ft of torque. The second generation Porsche 911 996 started developing the GT2, but eventually dropped. While developing, they shifted from an air-cooled to a water-cooled engine, and the result was a higher top speed of 198 MPH.
The Porsche 911 997 GT2RS was announced on May 4, 2010. The GT2 RS engine has been tweaked to develop more power, and the concept to launch the RS model was conceived back in 2007 by Andreas Preuninger, who was the manager of Porsche Motorsports back then. Like the 918 Spyder, one of the fastest hybrid cars ever, it was the best-performing Porsche 911 at that time.
The GT2 RS weighed 154 lbs less than the last generation GT2, and the company decided that only 500 units of the vehicle would be produced. The price of the vehicle at that point in time was estimated to be around $245,000.
